Parent & Family Orientation

Parent & Family Orientation

Parent & Family Orientation is a great opportunity to attend sessions about campus resources and meet faculty and staff who will be important partners in your student's WashU education.
Parent & Family Orientation: Fall Welcome
Fall 2017 Parent & Family Orientation begins Thursday, August 24, 2017 with move-in day. You will spend this day helping your student get settled in his or her residence hall. Convocation, our signature program for students and parents, is held on Thursday evening at 7:30 PM in the Athletic Complex. Parent & Family Orientation concludes in the afternoon on Friday, August 25, 2017.

Move-In Day
When you arrive on campus in August, be sure to pick up the Parent & Family Orientation booklet that will be available at the individual residence halls and the Parent  & Resource Center in Ursa's Fireside on the South 40. In addition to the most up to date schedule, the booklet provides hours for on-campus dining locations and university offices. We look forward to seeing your family on campus in August!

Spending time with your student during Bear Beginnings
As you can imagine, your student will be very busy during Bear Beginnings.  We encourage you to spend Move-In Day, Thursday, August 24th, 2017, helping your student to settle into their residence hall room and complete off-campus shopping trips, if needed. The day will fly by quickly so please remember to have an early dinner with your student from 4:00 PM - 5:15 PM.  All first-year students are expected to attend their required residential floor meeting on Thursday, August 24th from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM following by Convocation from 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM. Transfer students are expected to attend their required welcome hosted by Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM followed by Convocation from 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM.  We invite families to consider attending a career planning session while the students are busy before heading to Convocation.  We conclude Convocation with a family tradition and special St. Louis treat so we hope you will consider attending if you are able to do so.

Students have a rather packed schedule on Friday.  First thing Friday morning, they will participate in the First Year Reading Program from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM.  Engineering students will begin even earlier attending their Dean's meeting at 8:00 AM.  All students, other than Engineers, have time built into their schedules from 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM to have lunch with family members who are still visitng campus.  For students, the afternoon is filled with foreign language placement exams and open houses.  Most open houses are structured to allow students and families to attend together if they choose.  A series of resource and information sessions are also available to family members.  All families are invited to attend the Chancellor's Farewell Reception from 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM while students complete their open house visits.  All students have a window for dinner with families from 5:30 PM - 7:15 PM.  If your family chooses to enjoy a meal off-campus, please make sure your student is back for their required floor meeting at 7:30 PM.  Evening entertainment is provided for family members who are not travelling home until Saturday.
